Opinion: Why I believe Watches Are So Relevant In a Digital World

The watch industry continues to prove its resilience, and enthusiasm for luxury timepieces keeps growing. In this opinion piece – I want to share my personal perspective on why I believe the reasons are deeper than just trends or hype.

As someone passionate about collecting and deeply involved in the industry, I can confidently say there is nothing quite like watch collecting. The experience goes far beyond owning an object. It’s the fascination that comes from diving into the centuries- old history of incredible brands that laid the foundation for modern watchmaking, engineering, and craftsmanship. the culture around watch collecting is also as compelling as the watches themselves.

What makes this even more interesting is that most luxury watches are powered by mechanical movements ( Automatic or Manual wind) technology that’s technically speaking, obsolete in today’s digital world. We live in an era where technology evolves rapidly, constantly replacing what we just purchased. you don’t need a mechanical watch to tell time accurately. Your phone does that better.

So why do people – including the younger generation – continue gravitating towards traditional watchmaking?

Because mechanical watches represent permanence, which is rare today. They embody human craftsmanship, patience, and mechanical ingenuity. They’re built to last decades, even generations. In a world that feels increasingly disposable and fast moving, that kind of longevity feels meaningful.

There’s also something deeply human about our fascination with time itself. Time governs everything – our routines, ambitions, careers, and relationships. It is the one resource we all shared yet it is incredibly limited. That awareness gives a timekeeping instrument a lot of meaning and emotional weight. A watch is not just a time telling device – it’s a reminder of time’s value.

Luxury watches are also unique among collectibles. They are functional instruments with deep historical roots, often crafted from steel or precious metals that retail value. They combine art, engineering, and heritage. The technical sophistication behind each movement, and the endless details behind every reference and brand, create a world where learning never really ends. No matter how much I explore, I continue discovering new layers.

In conclusion – the watch world is small but powerful. It has stood the test to time – literally and figuratively. From what I see, interest is not fading. If anything, it’s expanding, reaching enthusiasts of all ages, especially younger collectors seeking something authentic, mechanical, and enduring in a rapidly digital world.
